For centuries Danish kings and queens have surrounded themselves with the most impressive examples of the art and craft of the changing times. One of the more spectacular examples of this is The Golden Tableau, a table decoration in gilt bronze, which was commissioned by Prince Christian Frederik, the later King Christian VIII, in 1820 from Denmark’s first internationally renowned artist, the sculptor Bertel Thorvaldsen.
